Cover Page Map: Inoh’s Small-scale Map from the Collection of the Tokyo National Museum

“Dainippon Enkai Yochi Zenzu” (General Coastal Map of Great Japan), which was based on Inoh’s nationwide survey and submitted to the government in 1821, is classified into three categories by map scale: two hundred and fourteen sheets of large-scale map (1:36000), eight sheets of medium-scale map (1:216000), and three sheets of small-scale map (1:432000). The original “Dainippon Enkai Yochi Zenzu” was destroyed by a fire at the Imperial Palace in 1873. However, some duplicate maps have been preserved. The map on the cover is a duplicate small-scale map from the collection of the Tokyo National Museum. This map was delivered to Shoheizaka Gakumonjo (Governmental College) by Tenmongata (the director of astronomical observatory of the government) Takahashi Kageyasu. The map is designated an important national cultural property.
