The Turbidite Layer—A New Sightseeing Spot in Muroto City

The Turbidite Layer is located at the Cape Muroto geosite, which is one of the most popular geosites of the Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark. The site is close to the Cape Muroto walkway, and draws a large number of tourists on holidays. Geoguides belonging to the Muroto City Tourist Guide Association provide guide services (explain attractions by the walkway) to more than 10,000 visitors annually, with individual visitors forming the biggest share. The area is also used for geology field classes, centering on plate tectonic studies for elementary, junior-high, and high school students, as well as university students and instructors. The Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark offers opportunities for visitors to learn how to live on the Earth, and stimulates them to think about how to build our society and how to live on the tectonically active and geologically dynamic Japanese Archipelago.
